Update - Why isn't the connection to O'Malley Road completed?

Improvements to Independence Drive are substanially complete; however, it stops about 100 feet short of O'Malley Road.  Construction on this segment began in September 2011 and was in progess at the same time as Huffman Road.  Impacting traffic on both Huffman and O'Malley would have limited access to the hillside.  Additionally, the short construction season and the need for additional coordination with the ADOT, requires that the connection  to O'Malley Road be completed in the summer of 2012.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Improving and extending Independence Drive from Colony Loop to O’Malley Road is recommended in the Anchorage 2025 Long Range Transportation Plan to improve circulation and access.  This section of roadway currently has a gravel surface and terminates at Ridgemont Drive.  As the surrounding area continues to develop, the need to extend Independence Drive to relieve traffic on adjacent local streets has increased.  Jamestown/Commodore Drive has become a major cut-through route for people traveling to O’Malley Road and the Seward Highway. Neither Jamestown Drive nor Commodore Drive is designed to carry the traffic volumes they are experiencing and complaints from adjacent property owners are increasing.  Residential development to the east of Independence Drive along Valley Park Drive, Ridge Park Drive, and Ridgemont Drive has exacerbated the problem.
